The 2006 Paper Plate Talks

I think it was the day before I left, Debbie, Roberta and I* sat down at the picnic table to discuss lake issues. We wrote our agreements on a paper plate, which I was supposed to post here. Unfortunately, I forgot the plate. I am now attempting to re-create the points we agreed on.

*Lyn was not there and I don't know if the paper plate was run by her after I left. Clearly, nothing is final until all four of us sign off on it. Still, I wanted to capture what we came up with.

So Where Are We?

We sat at the sagging, paint-bespeckled picnic table (if you would like to discuss the state of the picnic table, please do so here) and came up with all kinds of simple solutions to things that have been bugging us. We came up with a rotating schedule for schedule preference, we came up with a schedule for scheduling and we came up with a cost per week for the cottage (no - happily, not a cost for a cost!)

We wrote all our revelations down on a paper plate (and signed it!). I was supposed to post them here, but I forgot the paper plate! So, I am now going to attempt to re-create our decisions.

Rotating Schedule Preference

Every year, the person at the top of the list gets first choice in schedule, the second person gets second choice, etc. Then, the top person moves to the bottom of the list for the following year.

Schedule for a Schedule

In order to rent the cottage, we need to start advertising in early February. Before that, we need to sort out our own schedules so we will know whether we need to rent. Therefore, we need to have a finalized schedule by Feb 15. Here's how we get one:

  1. We all submit our schedule preferences by Jan 15.
  2. Roberta will give us her proposal for a schedule by Feb 1.
  3. We have two weeks to negotiate.

Weekly Cost

For family members, a week costs $1000. Approximately $850 of that goes to the cottage expenses and $150 goes to the maintenance kitty.

Non-family member rent is still $2000. $850 of that goes to Echo expenses, and the rest goes into the kitty.

If the kitty reaches $5000, we will reduce the family rate.
